Reid Barton
Hello everyone. I'm Reid Barton, 17, from Arlington, MA. This is my
second year at camp. I was on the US team last year and won gold medals at
the BOI, CEOI, and IOI.
I started programming in 6502 assembly language, Basic, and Logo sometime
before kindergarten, when I began programming in Pascal. I switched to C
in third or fourth grade. Since then I have learned C++, Perl, and Lisp.
At the end of eighth grade I started working part-time at the MIT
Laboratory for Computer Science in the Supercomputing Technologies Group,
with Professor Charles Leiserson, the L in Introduction to Algorithms by
CLR. I worked on the Cilkchess parallel chess program, one of the
applications developed in Cilk, a C-based language for programming parallel
supercomputers.
Since August 1999, when Charles took a two-year leave from MIT, I've been
working part-time at Akamai Technologies (http://www.akamai.com), a company
which speeds up internet content delivery. I'm a developer in the
Performance Analysis Group, where recently I've been learning more than I
ever wanted to know about how streaming media works. :)
In addition to computer science, I am also interested in math. I have
competed in various math competitions including the IMO, where I won gold
medals the past three years. Other interests of mine include playing the
piano (12 years) and cello (10 years) and learning foreign languages.
I look forward to seeing all of you at camp. In the meantime, I'll see
some of you at ACSL and ARML (at Penn State). You can talk to me on ICQ
(#9959478) or AIM (MOPReid, for historical reasons).
Regards,
Reid
P.S. I'll be joining former cowmates Percy and John at MIT in the fall,
along with Yuran. Tom and Thuc--where will you be going?
